Week 9
SETT Framework is an important topic that I am glad I was able to do more research on and gain a better understanding of through this week's readings and videos. The meaning of this topic is essentially the steps that need to be taken before selecting assistive technologies for students. SETT, standing for
S - Students/Skills: Understanding the students' skills and their learning habits, as well as their strengths and weaknesses.
E - Environment: Focusing on the environment they're working in, as well as how this may be affecting their schoolwork and habits.
T - Tasks: Analyzing the tasks that the student may be required to complete and what could assist them with this.
T - Tools: The final step, choosing an assistive technology that may be best suited for the student.
After reading the document provided with the instructions for this blog posting, a few different topics specifically stood out to me the most. The first one being, of course, the "E" in SETT: "Environment". I believe that this is more important than some may feel. The environment that a student is working in can change everything. If a student is working in a noisy environment, they may struggle with focusing on a specific task without getting distracted. After reviewing the rest of the steps, it may be decided that a tool like headphones is a good option. However, the environment can mean more than just the actual location, such as the attitude that the staff who may be working with the student may have. It may take more than just deciding on an assistive technology to support the student, and you may need to take other steps.
The second topic that stood out to me was the point on how it is critical to receive multiple perspectives before identifying the best assistive technology support for your student. As stated in the reading paired with the blog posting, "everyone involved brings different knowledge, skills, experience, and ideas to the table" (p. 3. Using the SETT Framework to Level the Learning Field for Students with Disabilities.) With this point, it reminds you that it could be beneficial to have everyone who may have interacted with the student, whether that be a teacher, education assistant, or parent, get involved with running through each of the different steps and selecting a tool.
SETT Framework is a great way to ensure success for students of all learning types and to support them with any disability that may impact their studies. It is important to follow these steps in order and before selecting a tool, so we can best understand how each student learns, and so we can best identify the support that would have the best results.
